"Last January We Locked the World’s #1 Achiever in a Dallas
Hotel Room for Four Hours and Begged Him to Tell Us His
Secrets for Achieving More Than 550 Major Life Goals"
What We Got Was a Shockingly Simple System That Took Him
To The Top of the Highest Peaks in the World and Will
Take You to the Biggest Victories You've Ever
Experienced
Dear Friend,
A number of years ago I was on an airplane reading the
original Chicken Soup for the Soul® by Mark Victor
Hansen and Jack Canfield. As you probably know, it’s
packed with some incredibly inspirational (and
instructional) stories.
But one story literally blew me away. It so captured me
that many years later, I still feel the "aftershock"
from it.
It’s the story of a fifteen-year-old American boy who
happened to overhear his parents and some friends
talking in the next room.
A gentleman in the group remarked, “I wish I was John’s
age again. There are so many things I wanted to do that
I didn’t get to. I wish I could start over.” Struck by
the frustration and longing he heard in the man’s voice,
John did something that would change his life—and
ultimately many others—forever.
Grabbing a sheet of paper and a pen, he sat down at the
kitchen table in his family’s California home, and wrote
three words at the top: “My Life List.” He then
proceeded to write down 127 individual goals that he
wanted to reach during the course of his lifetime.
What happened next is
something of fairy tales and nothing short of amazing.
In fact, it would be a great fairy tale EXCEPT it is
TRUE.
Before Indiana Jones … before Crocodile Dundee … even
before Steve Irwin … there was John Goddard. Known far
and wide as “the man who has done it all,” this
world-renowned adventurer has traversed the globe by
land, air, and sea – setting records, making history,
and developing an awe-inspiring reputation and
friendships along the way.
During the course of his legendary life, John has
experienced enough hair-raising escapades and
death-defying escapes to fill the pages of a hundred
summer blockbusters.
Just
look at his original list of 127 goals (remember he
was 15 when he wrote these)
That list alone is enough to divide among ten people and
they could all be proud of living spectacular lives.
But John DIDN”T STOP THERE….
He ADDED (and ACCOMPLISHED) more than 400 OTHER GOALS
ALONG THE WAY!!
Are you beginning to understand why I was so blown away
when I first read his amazing story?
However the real thrill of the John Goddard story isn’t
what he has done … it’s HOW he has done it. And it is a
story with tremendous implications for anyone who dreams
of being, doing, and having more in life.
After I read John’s story in Chicken Soup I decided to
make my own life list. As a direct result of making this
list I began to experience some remarkable goals in my
life. One of those is a memory I will always cherish
---- going into the small village in southern Italy that
was home to my mother’s family for many years. It was so
surreal, as if I was part of a movie that I was
watching.
Now it’s important to the story to know that before I
made my life list I had never been out of North America
--- didn’t even possess a passport. But that changed
when I began to dream about the things I’d always wanted
to do, and I put those dreams down on my own Life List.
When I became a professional speaker I usually weaved
John’s story into my presentations. It’s the kind of
story that most audiences find some type of inspiration
from.
After I shared the story at Jim Rohn’s 2004 Weekend
Leadership Event I heard from people from around the
globe. It even impacted the life of Kyle Wilson, the
President of Jim Rohn International, who wrote, “after
hearing Vic Johnson's VIP Breakfast and the story of
John Goddard, I was instantly moved to spend the rest of
that morning setting my top 50 life goals.”
One of my new life goals
was to meet "the real life Indiana Jones."
So when I was scheduled for a trip to California in late
2005 I picked up the phone and called the man the LA.
Times once called “the real life Indiana Jones.”
I was surprised that he actually answered the phone at
the number that I wasn’t even sure was his. But even
more surprising was that instead of some Harrison Ford-esque
swashbuckler, or the hard crusted attitude one might
expect from someone who’s had more than 40 near-death
experiences, instead I was met by this warm, charming
and polite voice who seemed genuinely interested in this
call from a total stranger.
I was struck at the time (and every conversation I’ve
had with him since) by how curious he is. He would
rather be asking you questions about you and your
experience, rather than talking about the mind-boggling
achievements he’s had. It’s easy to understand how he
read the bible cover to cover as well as almost the
entire Encyclopedia Britannica. He has a voracious
appetite for knowledge.
And an incredible gift for making people feel
comfortable. After I told him that I’d been “talking
about him” (in my presentations) for several years, I
offered to send him a DVD recording of one of my
presentations, and volunteered that I was coming to
California and I’d like to “buy him a cup of coffee.”
He gave me the address to send the DVD to and told me
that he’d look forward to seeing me when I went to the
West Coast.
I half-expected to be
blown off or he'd be conveniently unavailable.
So as we prepared for a New Year’s trip to watch Lisa’s
beloved Texas Longhorns play in the Rose Bowl for the
National Collegiate Championship, I picked up the phone
and called John Goddard back. If I’m completely honest,
I’ll confess that I was half-expecting he’d blow me off
or be conveniently unavailable. So you can imagine my
surprise when he not only agreed to meet us, he invited
Lisa and I over to the home he shares with his lovely
wife Carol.
I had talked to him on the phone twice and he seemed
genuinely humble, non-pretentious and unassuming, so I
wasn’t really sure what to expect. I mean, after all,
this IS the first person in history to ever go the
entire length of the 4200-mile-long Nile River (and he
did it in a 16-foot kayak). He’d stared down hostile
natives and escaped the attacks of angry Hippos. He’d
been interviewed by the great David Frost, appeared on
the pages of National Geographic, Reader’s Digest, Life
Magazine and more than 200 television shows, among many
others.

But it wasn't Conan the Destroyer that greeted us that
day in his home. As he came into the room I
noticed that John was about average height and about average
weight (for a fit person). He has an attractive
appearance but not movie-star looks.
Because he is so humble and unassuming, one could easily
mistake it for shyness (which is definitely not the
case). In many ways John could pass as a very
ordinary person. But inside lives someone who
early on made the decision that he would not live an
ordinary life.
Inside lives one of the most extra-ordinary mortals to
ever walk the planet. |
Walking through his home was like walking through a
museum, with artifacts from a lifetime of adventures in
the four corners of the world.
It was several of the most engrossing hours I've ever
spent, and when it was over and he invited us to stay in
touch, I made a PACT with Lisa:
Not only were we going
to stay in touch, but we were going to share John's
incredibly inspiring story with as many people as we
could.
And an opportunity to do that would happen about a year
after we first met.
When the producers of my Goals 2 Go TV show at TSTN said
they'd love to fly John to Dallas for a show, I crossed
my fingers and called John, hoping I could persuade him
to come and share his story.
During the call I told him that I'd also had the idea
that we could get together before our studio appointment
and do an audio session where we would discuss the
"secrets" that he'd used to pack about 20 lifetimes into
one (and he's far from done with this one).
It was high-fives all round my house when he graciously
agreed to all my requests, and I quickly lined up the
best audio professional I knew of in Dallas.
In fact, Martin (the audio professional) has thanked me
countless times for letting him do that project. I
knew we had a phenomenal recording when I saw Martin's
face change in amazement on numerous occasions as he
listened on his headset to the astonishing wisdom that
poured out of John that day.
Here's just a small
sample of what you'll learn from these exclusive
recordings:
• What the World’s #1 Achiever does day in and day out
to stay focused, positive, faithful, and determined ---
and how you can use the very same fundamental
principles.
• The most powerful principle of goal setting that every
achiever must master (it enabled John to achieve his #1
goal and most of the rest as well).
• The techniques he uses to prepare himself for
challenges, tune out the naysayers, and quiet his own
self-doubt (he's got the same self-doubt you and I have
--- he's just figured out a pretty easy way to deal with
it and dismiss it).
• The handful of daily and regular habits that have
enabled him to accomplish so much (habits that are
easily mastered when you know the "motivation trigger"
to pull).
• How to look around obstacles, rather than them staring
you in the face, to live a satisfied, fulfilled life.
• The biggest reason resolutions fail, and what John
does to see them through every time.
• A simple (but little-used) time-management technique
that allows you to turn wasted time into turbo-charged
production --- creating almost super-human results in a
very short time.
• The secret of all world-class achievers that will light the fire of
persistence under even the weakest of willpowers.
• How John Goddard learned to live with real physical
fears (and the imagined ones we all deal with) to
continually push forward and live his dreams.
• How to understand and use our natural instincts to
eliminate the bad habits that we create, that get in the
way of our goals, and how to overcome them to achieve
success.
• The self-talk script that anyone can learn that took
John to the top of most of the world’s major mountains
and down all of its major rivers.
And lot's more...
